From Field to Finance: BriAnna Walker Coaches Students on Workforce Competitiveness and Financial Li
SMITHFIELD - BriAnna Walker, Talent and Leadership Development Manager, visited Smithfield-Selma High School on Thursday, December 4, 2025, as a guest speaker, engaging students in an interactive and thought-provoking session focused on workforce competitiveness and financial literacy.
Using the mindset of an athlete and a coach, Ms. Walker challenged students to think strategically about their future careers. Through three dynamic scenarios—stepping into the roles of job candidate, recruiter, and supervisor—students explored how performance, achievement, and advancement intersect in the workplace. The exercises encouraged self-reflection and helped students better understand how daily decisions and habits can shape long-term success.
Ms. Walker also shared insider insight into what recruiters are truly looking for in standout candidates. She spoke candidly about the competitive nature of today’s job market, encouraging students to confidently showcase their skills, accomplishments, and work ethic. Her discussion of internships as intentional stepping stones toward career success resonated strongly, motivating students to seek out real-world experiences that align with their goals.
In addition to career readiness, Ms. Walker emphasized the importance of financial literacy. She highlighted practical concepts such as budgeting and the critical need for an emergency fund, helping students see how financial responsibility supports independence and long-term stability.
“Her perspective on internships as strategic stepping stones toward future career success was both inspiring and empowering,” shared CTE Business Education Teacher and DECA Advisor Mrs. Sonia Robertson. “Her emphasis on financial responsibility, particularly the importance of establishing an emergency fund, laid a crucial groundwork for achieving long-term stability.”
The session provided students with valuable tools and perspectives—preparing them not only to compete in the workforce, but to thrive both professionally and financially.
