Craig Olive, Johnston County Register of Deeds, announced Tuesday that his 17 th annual Shred
Event is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 9:00AM – 12:00PM. The event is free to
the public and will be held in the parking lot of Rose Manor Shopping Center, located at 1519
W. Market St, Smithfield, NC. This year’s event is also sponsored by Local Government
Federal Credit Union, Civic Federal Credit Union, The Johnston County Report, Speedy/Neal,
Hinson’s Printing, and InterState Outdoor, Inc.

A strong supporter of efforts to prevent identity theft, Mr. Olive believes that these annual Shred
Events are very beneficial to the citizens of Johnston County. “I will continue my efforts to
prevent identity theft as long as I am in public service. These annual shred events provide our
citizens with a free way to dispose of personal and sensitive information. I am honored to
continue our partnership with our other sponsors to provide this service for all citizens of
Johnston County. The shredding of sensitive and personal documents is a proactive way to
protect your identity, and I am proud to sponsor these events.”

According to the Federal Trade Commission, the following are some warning signs that
someone may have stolen your information:
  • You see unfamiliar transitions from your bank account or unexpected charges on
  • your credit card statement.
  • Credit report anomalies – unrecognized accounts, loans or inquiries on your
  • credit report.
  • Your regular bills, financial statements or mail stop arriving, which could indicate
  • someone changed your billing address.
  • Debt collectors call you about debts that do not belong to you.
  • You receive bills, new credit cards, or account statements for services and items
  • you did not request.
  • You receive medical bills for services you never received, or your health
  • insurance plan rejects a legitimate claim.
  • The IRS notifies you that more than one tax return was filed in your name or that
  • you have income from an employer you don’t work for.
  • Government payments or benefits (like Social Security or unemployment) are
  • stopped or claimed by someone else.
  • You receive notices from organizations stating that your personal information
  • was compromised by a data breach.
If you notice any of the above clues, visit the official IdentityTheft.gov to report the theft, create
an official recovery plan and contact the three national credit bureaus to place a free fraud alert
on your credit reports.

In order to better serve the community, we are limiting the number of items to three (3)
boxes/trash bags per vehicle. Please be mindful of the items you are bringing to shred. For
prompt service, please have your items prepped and ready; otherwise, you will be asked to
adjust your items and re-enter at the back of line. Thank you for your understanding in this
matter.

The Shred Event has been an annual free event for Mr. Olive since 2009. He looks forward to
the event each year and has no plans to discontinue the effort. “Our shred events are a
highlight for me each year. I enjoy helping people and look forward to seeing our residents at
this event”, states Olive. At the 2025 shred event, 10,500 pounds of paper were shredded.
